Epicondylitis
Tennis elbow
- Elbow
Epicondylitis is a tendinopathy (inflammation of the tendon sheath causing loss of function) of the forearm extensor muscle tendons, caused by micro-traumas or repetitive movements. Epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow, is common in tennis players and also affects the general population, with a prevalence of 1 to 3%, primarily in those aged 35 to 54. Individuals whose jobs require high grip strength or repetitive motions are at a greater risk of this injury, which is characterized by localized pain in the lateral elbow that worsens with: • Pressure on the area; • Resisted movement of wrist and finger extension; • Stretching of the forearm muscles. Physiotherapy should be the first-line treatment, as studies show favorable outcomes, especially with manual therapy and exercise techniques. The primary goals of intervention are: • Pain control; • Maintaining or improving range of motion; • Increasing grip strength.
